In all your comments, you are "spot-on"!!! That is exactly how new cultivars are found - they
are simply seedlings that have noticeable differences and then the steps are taken to register
them, they are introduced to the trade and wa-laa - a NEW Japanese maple!

I got a grafted Sharpe's Pygmy from this place, but dont know much about them.
