My favourite place.
I try to visit Staverton Thicks at least a couple of times a year.I have mentioned it several times before. About 20 mins from where I live, Staverton is an ancient Deer park, once owned by Henry the eighth. There is a map of the wood, that marked all the trees at that time and most of them are still there. Made up of mainly of Oak and Holly (Quercus and Ilex), with the odd Rowan(Sorbus). None of the Oaks are very tall, due to pollarding and the fact they grow on pure sand. The Hollies on the other hand are the largest in the country. I love this place! It is full of gnarled and twisted, veteran trees, full of old age and charm. I get all my inspiration for my deadwood carving from here too.
