Red currant Empty Red currant

Post  Andrei Darusenkov Mon Jul 12, 2010 10:01 am

Hi, everybody!

This red currant was originally planted by my grandfather some 35 plus years ago. It has been potted already for about 15 years - the oldest surviving "tree" in my collection. Despite little desire to develop dense branching it is quite striking with fruit.

Best,

Andrei

Hi Andrei. How very interesting - I was just discussing with a bonsai friend this past weekend if redcurrant would make a decent bonsai.

The answer is obviously yes, and if I go ahead and dig up my garden shrub (at the appropriate time of course) I hope it looks as good as this one of yours.

One question - what size is your tree - height and girth?

Many thanks for posting this.

Fiona, many thanks! It's about 40 cm tall and the trunk is perhaps 6-7 cm wide at nebari....

It's a lovely tree, and so original.

A reference too keep...

Edit: I've just mentioned it on my favourite French forum :

Looks like it maybe a good idea to go scrounging down at the allotments. I remember someone posting pics of Gooseberry bonsai as well. Very Happy

Hi Andrei,
what a wonderfully fantastic image you have created! All logical tree like proportions are lost, and jet, it is an amazingly enchanted image that makes you forget all that nonsense in a instant! The pot compliments this fairytale Bonsai perfectly!
It is a real eye opener and there for a real piece of Bonsai Art! In my opinion that is! Smile
Well don,
Hans van Meer.
