Tokyo Satsuki Festival 2007
Here are a few photos from the 2007 Tokyo Satsuki Festival in Ueno Park. The full set is posted at http://cid-5c2bbe8223ddbf8d.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Tokyo%20Satsuki%20Fest%202007 . I think this year's festival will be May 26th to 31st. (There's still time to plan your trip!)

Nice trees. I'd like to go some time.
What's the purpose of the green screen?

They didn't have the screen in my day. We used to live just over the hill from Ueno and went every spring. It would be nice to see it again (sigh).
I suspect it's to keep flower pickers' hands off the trees.

I live in Gaithersburg, about 15 minutes north of the Washington DC beltway.
They rolled up the green screens when they opened the show in the morning. I guess they were just for night-time security.
I won't be going to this year's festival. I was just in Tokyo for Kokufu, and one trip a year is plenty.

I don't think you will find many (any) growing in Philly. They're reliably hardy only to zone 7.
For folks interested in azaleas, here's an interesting page: http://www.sonomahort.com/azalea_info.htm

They are growing them in the ground for a LONG time. They life them every few years, trim branches, etc. then put them back in the ground.
