Re: European Bonsai Congress 2009
This post is going the same way as the as the ‘is bonsai art’ debate.
Here are a few ‘home truths’
I believe it was John Naka introduced the concept of the live demo
Audiences want to see results
A bonsai artist’s reputation is way too important to screw up by wrecking an important tree for the sake of a demo.
Bonsai is a long term activity, if the first styling is creates a pleasing image all well and good.
I am personally aware that the tree was prepared over a period of 4 years prior to the demo.
Let this post get back on track and consider how vitriolic the responses would have been if these comments were made about Sensei Naka.

Matsu & Peter, my comments where not intended to offend or to cast doubt on the integrity of Kevin, I have followed his work for many years and I am a great admirer. If I did so I apologise.
This writing business is a tricky one and accordingly the tone of a message can easily be misconstrued.
Tony - you have put an issue to bed... this tree has in essence been styled over the course of 4 years.
...And I reiterate - The styled tree is spectacular.
Kind regards
Justin

justin. no offence taken dude!
i am a tad quick to defend kevin a times so if you felt my response was aggressive my apologies!
but the essence of my waffle was about the statements that demos should not produce an end result.
if i pay money to see anything on stage i want to see something i cannot yet do, or will never be able to do!
i also want to be inspired to go home and bloody well try harder!
and as anyone who has seen the "el bitcho" in person will verify that altho the canopy is in place there is a lot of real tree structure.and it will only get better as the next few years will show
that is the true genius of kev!
but i am obviously biased!

Hello all,
This convention it’s been the biggest bonsai event that I never seen, even bigger that Ginkgo, not only in the number of trees, because the quality of the bonsai too.
I just upload the photographs in my webpage (it’s a shame that to add pictures here is so difficult)
