Scots Pine called Ted
Wired up a Scots Pine this afternoon. This tree was collected near Inverness in Scotland, several years ago. Its had one wiring, then been left for 2 years and now wired again. I don't usually name trees but the year it went from box to bonsai, my father died, so I named it after him. Before wiring...

Hi Will,
This is a very nice result, the natural shari is great, and I like the slightly differnt angle almost as much as the front. Have you had thoughts on the eventual pot for the tree?
Jonny.

Hello Jonny. Haven't really thought about a pot for this one as yet. Got any ideas?

Will,
This is one of my favorites you've shared to date. I also agree, the photo of the 2nd angle is also a very nice viewpoint.
Not sure of a pot, but I am sure you'll nail it when the time comes to choose the right one.

Re: Scots Pine called Ted
Take it this is another one that is off the list of possible clear-outs from your garden!
Well done (again), Will. Seriously nice tree and it looks like the needles are the perfect size. Did you have to do much to reduce the needle size or is it Beuvronensis?
btw I'm thinking of what kind of tree would be appropriate to dedicate to my late mother. Probably need to be a witch hazel.
Oooooooooh! A cold wind just blew through the room.

This Pine comes from your neck of the woods Fiona. Ben Aigan, Aberlour, near Inverness. The tree is fed well but I restrict the water during the summer to reduce needle size. Pines are quite droubt tolerant and cope well with this.

Will,
When you say you restrict water in the summer....what visible signs are you using as your cue to water aside from dryness of the soil? Is there something you watch for with the tree? Also, on average what are you peak summer temps & how long will you go between watering?
Yesterday in Tulsa it was 85F, sun was out and the wind ALL day was a sustained 45MPH with gusts of 60 MPH! I watered my quinces three times!! Its not even summer yet!!
Thanks for the information.
Neil

Re: Scots Pine called Ted
This picture shows needles from another Ben Aigan Pine thats still in development and I'm not concerned with needle length. The smaller one came of Ted. Summer temps are sometimes high 20's 0c or 90's f. Rather than giving a good drenching, like the rest of my trees get, I just flick water to moisten the surface of the soil and spray the foliage. This all goes to pot with a wet Summer though

Re: Scots Pine called Ted
That's ruddy miles away from me! I'm actually nearer Liverpool or even Belfast than Inverness. Plus, they're a bit strange up there in Inversneck!will baddeley wrote:This Pine comes from your neck of the woods Fiona. Ben Aigan, Aberlour, near Inverness.
Good whisky territory though, if that's your fancy.
