back from japan #3
while at the kato nursery-mansei-en in omiya, hatsuji kato wondered if we would like to attend the 17th ryokufu bonsai exhibit being held at the Green club in Ueno park. not only did he extend the invitation, but gifted us with tickets to the event. so a few days later, our little band showed up at the green club for this long running exhibit that none of us had ever heard about. the show trees occupied the 3 floors of the green club-maybe 100 trees more or less, all flawlessly exhibited and nearly perfect in their styling and beauty. the cards with each tree were in japanese, so we were unable to get the owners' names nor the other descriptive language the cards contained. we were not allowed to photograph the show trees so I cannot share the images with you, however, quite a few of them were easy to recognize as well known bonsai . the fact too that there were some heavy weights from the japanese bonsai world in attendence (kunio kobayashi, shinji suzuki, hiroshi takeyama, hatsuji kato ) plus others, gave us the idea that maybe this was an important show. what we were allowed to photograph was the sales area outside. while much smaller than the kokufu bazaar that takes up the entire green club premises, ryokufu sales area offered some astounding trees, measured by our standards. [img]https://i.servimg.com/u/f6[url=https://servimg.com/image_preview.php? crab apple. Really, hard to believe it!kauaibonsai wrote: ... ... I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that these trees were for sale. in most places these would be show centerpieces. ... ...
I also noticed that some prices you mention are quite reasonable, not at all expensive

thanks for the responses, guys. keep in mind these are for sale trees-imagine what the display trees inside looked like. the prices I saw were in some cases, surprisingly modest. if you wanted to spend serious money there opportunities to do that also. what struck me was the overall quality of the stuff for sale - starting with stock trees at nurseries, going forward to trees for sale at plant sales. I took more than 700 pictures. I will post a few morel in the coming days.
