New tree species found in UK
Interesting post in another forum about new species of Sorbus (Rowen/whitebeam) found in a UK gorge.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/6902489/New-tree-species-discovered-in-Cheddar-Gorge.html
Kev . . . you are a climber. Ever been there?

Thanks for the info Jim Ive heard of a new Whitebeam discovererd in Wales a couple of years back. Its funny that such a small and heavily populated country should be yielding new discoveries. Thanks again.

Re: New tree species found in UK
Good grief, it is very hard to believe that new species can still be found in a place as popular and well studied as this. The place has been really well known and studied for a very long time. Wikipedia has a lot of nice detail here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheddar_Gorge
I've driven through several times and after taking one look at the loose limestone rock, gave up any idea of ever climbing there. I prefer nice reliable rough granite, gritstone etc.

I'm just flabbergasted that the UK has places like that. Dunno why, but I'd pictured it as mostly rolling pastoral scenery.
Of course the only time we've been there it snowed so hard that we couldn't get out of London, so what do I know.

Makes you wonder how many undiscovered species and varieties there are in the US?

Might just bring my bike down to Joy of Bonsai and add a couple of days touring the Gorge to it.
Race you, Will?

It is surprising how many 'undiscovered' species crop (no pun intended) up in the UK, the Plymouth Pear is a prime example. I am certain that more 'species' of YEW will be 'discovered'... all it takes is for someone to 'investigate' as has happened with the Cheddar Gorge trees.

Jim
if you visit england again i can strongly recommend you go north
-in the north west there is the lake district with stunning scenery
and the city of York (2 and a half hours from london) is in the north east
both fantastic venues
from york - go on the train to Durham and Edinburgh -
you will not be dissapointed
i am sure we can arrange some gardens for you to visit also.
happy new year to you and yours

Re: New tree species found in UK
What wonderful news to end 2009!! Thanks Big Steve- you've made my day!
According to your post Edinburgh is now in England.
Glaswegians everywhere are rejoicing. Church membership has soared again as there evidently is a god.
And a big hello to all my Edinbugger friends who are reading this (very tongue-in-cheek) piece. I'd invite you in but you'll have had your tea.
Happy Hogmanay on behalf of Weegies the world over.

Jim,
If you are coming over to the UK, and wish to travel up North, please get in touch.
I can sort you out some gardens and nurseries to visit, you don't need to go as far North as Scotland!!!!!!
Happy New Year to everyone
Graham

Jim,
May I just draw your attention to Graham's location before pointing out (politely of course) that the standard and widely accepted definition of a Yorkshireman is a Scot with the generosity wrung out of him.

sorry- we all know edinburgh is in scotland i am not geographically challenged just forgot to add it to my blurb.
however the yorkshire man observation is generally true.
having said that scots are generally known to be careful with their money!!!
but then again i am from Durham so i was sandwiched between both!!!!
