I would keep it. It adds some interest to the rather straight middle part of the trunk.

I don't think that would help your overall design.
If I may, I think your entire tree would greatly benefit from really lightening up and creating much smaller pads to compliment the feminine design of the tree. The apex of course is the exception and needs to fill out.
The tree looks healthy, but this reduction should take place if the tree is growing well which only you can determine.
It's also very symmetrical which could be what you're going for, but I think a push to either side would also help age the design; if that's what you're looking for.
