I think it might be some kind of elm ...
It appeared, self seeded, 4 or 5 years ago. I like the size and shape of the leaves and the fact that it has chosen us and not the other way round. I'm going to try to make a bonsai out of it.
It has sprouted new growth around where I removed the lower branches a couple of years ago (I can't remember why I did that!) so I have chopped the trunk off just above that point and am hoping that the lower growth will develop. I will let it grow freely now for 2 years and then look at it again.

(per trunk) birch rather than elm ?
