Hello Macko,
My suggestion would be to stick it in the ground and let it grown wild for about 3 years, dig it up and reduce the roots and then let it grow freely again for another few years. In between those years you could do a major cut-back to the desired future shape and then let it grow wild again.
Unless, you want the trunk to stay this skinny and the branches to be almost the same thickness. I would like to ask you, what would you like to accomplish with this tree? Do you have any pictures you can show that would be close to your end goal?

yes Macko - it looks nice with leaves, but i believe Thomas' suggestions are very good for making this a good bonsai.
