Stunning job, thanks for sharing, i have a couple of these....also known as Downy Birch.
lets see what it looks like in autumn leaf when you have a chance
from what i understand, its best to prune these when they are actively growing, prune after aug and you risk branch die back on this species...
i often wonder if this is the case if you remove an entire branch off the trunk, or is it just when pruning the tips or secondaries/tertaries from main branches that main branch would then die back. anyway, i ceased all pruning of my birches 3 months ago!

The new growth of the branches the short thing when it has 5 or 6 outbreaks, the strong pruning after they fall the leaves
