Cryptomeria Japonica pruning
Hi everyone,
Can anyone give me a little advise about pruning these trees.I have had a nice specimen bought as a garden centre plant about 14yrs ago.I am pleased with the overall shape and development of the tree but am a little confused with how I ought to be pruning the foliage/needles.I have seen specimens of mature bonsai of Cryptomeria Japonicas where the foliage is pruned closely, and others(like mine) where the foliage is left "shaggy".I would be most grateful for any input.
Regards Colin

They are like junipers, dont leave a branch without healthy foliage at the end.
Establish the primary and secondary branch structure as any other three, and then start building the pads by trimming the tertiary branches to 0.5mm short making sure there is green foliage at the end.
