Andre`s Galpinia transvaalica Mame Landscape, Four little trees on a hill..
Dearest friends
Here are some progression pics of my 7cm high Pride of the Transvaal trees.
This progression is over a year, The year before that, the trees were about 1.4 - 2m high. I chopped them down to about 3 cm above ground level. They backbudded like you cant believe. I left them to grow as you can see in the first pic.
The News paper was added for the date.
This picture was a year ago in August I think, but about a year ago.
Then they were cut back as you can see at the bottom. And they grew again beautifully .
Top view to see the placing. O yes after planting two of the trees died. The balance was out, because know there was only 4 trees left....but alas........I am a member of the Arbor arts Collective, and we can do everything. hihihi ihi
The rock its planted on I picked up in the mountains. What do you think?
Love and Light
Andre

Re: Andre`s Galpinia transvaalica Mame Landscape, Four little trees on a hill..
I like it!
Interesting arrangement of the "taboo" 4 tree planting, problem solved nicely. It is not "out of balance" at all. Love the slab, really nice.
Also you sent me to Wikipedia to figure out what the heck Galpinia transvaalica was. The minor misspelling of the genus name didn't slow me too much. The genus Galpinia is in the Lythraceae, the loosestrife family. Other members of the group include Culphea and Pemphis, both often used for bonsai. Interesting South African endemic.
Does Galpinia have attractive flowers? I'm sure most IBC members are not familiar with the species. As time permits tell us about it. The leaves are really tiny.
Thanks Andre for sharing. Really a cool landscape.

i will leave the science up to our mad horticulturist...
(but now that i think of it we have several and 2 are mad, MAD, I TELL YOU !!!)
all i can say is that i really really dig it...
the rock is incredible, as is the quick progression of the trees and their placement in the 'scape.
you got that right !!!
when is four not four ???
when you take four and separate it into one and three...
balance achieved !!!
(though your structure over the water/gap/gorge (?) may be a bit small in scale...? too hard to tell from the pics)

I agree about the bridge. It looks like it should be a large structure seen from far away, which is fine with the land mass perspective but makes the trees look ginormous! Since the trees are most of the reason we are here, perhaps a slightly larger bridge that looks like it's for foot travel and is placed slightly higher would change the perspective, one such as in my dreadful first penjing at:

O f...... I only noticed now I added an i were there shouldnt be one, I will correct it quickly. Thanks Leo, and thanks for the compliment.
Thanks Kevin and Milly!. Yes I know the bridge is too small, but I wanted to portray as you said ginormous trees in a fairytail forest, here is the pic that I fashioned my trees to...
Milly I will take a pic for you from the back, whenthe rain stops....

Well don't mind stuffy old me. And if you think of the baobabs we were talking about on another thread, it makes sense that way too. Very 'outside the pot' use of stone!

Hi Andre
I like your slab with the lovely little landskape, I am sure you had fun creating it....toys for grown up plantlovers.
I did not realy see there was only 4 trees, as they work nicely together...had you planted them in a less clever/ artistisk way, would we maybe all have thought 4 trees only, was no good.
I also think your trees look like baobabs, and I would have prefered it all was held in a african style, and you not had used the chinese bridge...maybe it is time to play even more
Kind regards Yvonne

Hey Andre.
I like this landscape. I was not expecting to scroll down to see those trees looking the way they do now!
Of the bridge. I do not think it is too small. I think it is too low, seemingly inaccessible.
If you were to build up the moss to the height of the top of the bridge, or a little higher even, it would be more accessible, and believable.
I love the slab, in fact, if you created cliff faces of the same material, the bridge would look wicked over the gorge.
A bit of rock faces would also help break up the green mounds, which are a bit too round IMO. It makes the landscape "end" where I would like to start to imagine it going forever.
Sorce
P.s. I feel the same way as your avatar! Love it!

Thank you Yvonne! Your opinion means alot.
Yes I also get the Baobab feeling when I look at them. Huge massive trees...
I think I will replace the bridge with a stone or rope bridge to fit the theme. I think most agree that my bridge doesnt work with this little trees.
Im very glad you like them.
Thank you Sorce, I will definitely play with it a little more as to get it right.
Are you also a avid plant collector?

Only as pertains to a small Bonsai collection.
Or she would just send me to live in the woods!

You have also added some grass at the left side. It's nice but there is a little something size wise that is bothering me.
I wish Yvonne was still around so that she could see the new bridge.

i like the new bridge too... simpler and understated...
but i agree about grasses... or ?
perhaps a closer picture would resolve that in our eyes as it is the scale that is throwing me off...
