andre !
thanks for the language lesson as i prefer to refer to a tree by its native name...
and thats why the INTERNATIONAL forum rules, ok !!!
the parent tree is only about 5-6 inches (13-16cm ?) tall...
on the one in the red pot, that thicker green garden tie wire is used to avoid scarring, but i was thinking of trying aluminum and see how that goes as the green stuff doesnt have a strong enough hold for a cascade i'm working on...

I was just pulling your leg, beer city snake. You are welcome to use any which wire you please my friend.

Re: SPEKBOOOOOMS !!!
Kevin (Beer City Snake) and Andre - both you guys are nuts, LOL, in a good way.
Kevin I really like this one, nicely done. If you are looking for a place to go with the cuttings, remember the Mahone Middle School Bonsai Club has a group of about 8 to 12 youngsters learning bonsai. Contact Jean S. (their teacher moderator) if you'd like to donate extra cuttings to them. School session is wrapping up for this year, but late August early Sept, Jean will be glad to get donations, especially in multiples of 10, so there are no fights between the kids over who gets one.

Re: SPEKBOOOOOMS !!!
thanks marco !
another south african, eh ?
so cool to hear from folks that are LITERALLY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET !!!
this whole interwebby thing is kinda awesome...
and yeah these are some of my favs for various reasons...
they make great lil trees for children to learn and grow with,
due to their fast growing nature and childrens natural sense of patience (NOT )...
also good, easy to care for, gifts for the bonsai curious,,,
and for beginners, they are great to "play with"
(theres a guy on youtube with some absolutely spectacular old specimens)

Re: SPEKBOOOOOMS !!!
I became a little frustrated with how slow my spekboom was growing. Now I have the big one that was rescued. Want to speed up the growth. Mine didn't seem to grow well even when planted in the same soil as my jades. Would you mind, oh gracious KOS , sharing with lesser souls your soil recipe?

Sigh.. you South Africaans have let Dutch deteriorate too much. Of course not. Boom is singulare. Bomen is Plural. So.. King of the Spekbomen. Or better.. Koning van de Spekbomen, if we are proclaiming his rights in Afrikaans.
All joking aside.. These actually did come out nice. Not often that you see these as true tree-look-alikes

thank you o' back of leather !
and marco, considering that i am of nordic descent, i think i like the sound of "Koning van de Spekbomen" better
david - i use diatamceous earth, chicken grit, composted pine bark and maybe some pumice if i have some around...
i dont really measure, but sort of eye-ball it with some things getting a bit more of something and some a bit less...
i'm pretty sure these are pretty close enough to equal parts...

Re: SPEKBOOOOOMS !!!
Thanks, Kev. Maybe too much pine bark is the issue for me (50%).

Jy bedoel Spekbome.
There is no such thing as Spekbome veld. (Maybe in Dutch) Its stays Spekboom Veld. Singular and plural..... geez people, this wasnt a question to begin with.
Why dont we use the English translation. Elephant bush...o god.... then..... is it Elephant bushes veld, or is it Elephant bush veld... or maybe
Elephants's Bushes velde.
hi hihih hihihi
