root pruning western pines
How much is too much to take off of a western pine when root pruning? ive been researching and the consensus is that they only need light pruning, so how light exactly? its getting slightly warmer here in seattle so in about two or three weeks i plan to start pruning.

What pine is it? There are 25 pages of pine species listed in The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees - Western Edition.

That's a difficult question to answer.
I am NOT a pine expert, but in my experience most pines aren't partial to having more than 20 percent of roots trimmed at once. However, age, and size, stage of bonsai training, and pot size (old to new) all will play a role -- as will the stage of your own bonsai experience.

i see. and as for trimming the candles to make the needles shorter, do you just clip the candle in half width wise, or whats the procedure there? i understand youre not an expert but any input is appreciated.

That's what I would do, but I have no idea if that is proper for your western white pine. There are bonsai clubs in your area; I'd suggest you join one and consult with someone who is familiar with that species.
