Young Japanese Maple
I would shorten those two side branches. They are competing with the top.

Sorry folks, title changed and photo tilted.
Jake, from the look of it, it has to be informal upright isn't it?
Iris, agreed, was just thinking if i should just leave them till they thicken before shortening them.
Still a long time to go before they develop thick trunk and branches, might repot into a training pot.
Any more ideas?

I would completely remove those long branches and start working with the clump of leaves near the top of that too-long trunk. I also would get it out of that pot and into something that will allow this young tree to develop. You can do that now by just lifting the entire root ball and transferring the tree to something quite a bit larger.

That's what it looks like. It could be an informal broom. You could cut it shorter and wait for a new leader to emerge.

Jim and Jake,
Thanks very much for your suggestions. Will start work on it and get a training pot for it.
