bald cypress
I bought a bald cypress a month ago to try.. chopped it down and pruned the rootsto fit in a 16 inch round container.. it is covered in new shoots about 3 inches long.. should i pinch some of them off so the roots will not have to feed them all ??? i am asking if the ones i want would get more strength doing that.. thanks take care john

Re: bald cypress
I'd say remove unwanted branches in areas that you know you won't need them (whorls, multi-sprouts, bad angles, etc.), the rest let grow to strengthen the tree. I believe you have it wrong: the roots don't feed the branches, the food is produced by the leaves during photosynthesis, so the more leaves you have the more "food" is produced by the plant.

Bald cypresses are very tough trees. Nevertheless, you should let yours grow wild for the remainder of the season. You could do some selection in the apex later on, if you are able to definitively pick a new leader at that time. But next year will be the time to do your initial training.
Post a pic when you get a chance.
Good luck!
