last week i won this tree at our club meeting when we had guest artist owen reich which was such a good and informative meeting. but back to the tree this is going to be a tuff one as the tree already was fighting me back because the tree most likely hasn't been repotted in 10 years or so i repotted (which was like chipping away at concrete) but just plan to get a good root system back underneath the tree

Agree with you on getting healthy roots better established for this tree. You say it was like "chipping away at concrete". Was it potted in akadama?
For now, I would leave everything on this tree alone, until it recovers from the root work you did on it. Because, if you ultimately lose a branch or two possibly due to the stress of this emergency re-potting, the tree may wind up making some of those styling decisions for you!
But hopefully by next spring, the tree will have recovered enough to work and style a bit.

Nice tree!! I would also let the roots get established before working on the tree.

yes it was in a mix that contained akadama but the tree hasn't been repotted in who knows how many years. so much roots it was pushing the tree out the pot.
