Bugs eating my Japenese Maples Help
I hope someone can help identify and controll these bugs that are eating my maples. As you can see they seem to be a sap sucking insect that targets the new growth and destroys the leaves. I have tried both rogor and malathon with no lasting effect. Any help would be much appreciated . Thanks

Re: Bugs eating my Japenese Maples Help
Hi Bonsai,
I've had something similar collecting on my trident maples. Slightly different color though. Mine seem to gather on anything that is wilting from a blight, or just generally dying. They seem to be everywhere, I found simple pyrethrum spray (Yates i think) killed them, but more just flew in. In the end keeping trees and benches clear of dead or dying trident maple kept them away. It seems they were not causing the die back, but I think they were perpetuating it.

To be honest, Jay, the little devils wings flapped so fast I was unable to count how many they have.
The flies in question are small, about 5 mm long. Almost like a fungus gnat in behavior, but too big for them. I live near a lot of vineyards, I might ask them if they know of these flies as they seem to be attracted to sugars. I've only seen them on maples so far.
Sawfly are fairly ugly and big, they have a habit of excreting a sticky substance from their bottoms and wave it about at you when threatened. They tend to eat eucalyptus sp, and travel in packs. Never had sawfly on any of my trees. Here's a picture link (hope it works, it's rather long);

Have you tried a systemic insecticide? I've never had to use systemics on my maples, and I don't know if they're safe. So be sure to check that first.

I keep many different types of Japanese maple in my Bonsai collection, several are variegated and don't respond well to being sprayed with insecticides. As such, I have had great success with Acephate (also known as Orthene) solutions watered into the soil as a systemic with my Maples (as well as with many other species).
As always follow instructions and be safe about it but it works very well with piercing and sucking insects that don't respond well to topical sprays.
