2 year old beech & oak saplings
Hello everyone, I am new to this only having just joined.
I have two young trees, a Beech and an Oak which at present are in the garden in Weston super Mare, Somerset. Should I leave them there, are they too young to commence cutting roots and foliage? Should I put them in pots in readiness.
Appreciate any help/advice and am very excited.

How young are they?
Depending on how you want the trunk to be is how long they should stay in the garden to grow out. When the base of the tree is just about to the size you will want them as a bonsai, then you can think about digging them up. Early spring is the best time for digging anyway.

But if we leave them for another couple of years will the root not get damaged when we dig it up?

Ahah! That's part of the skill Beedoe. Digging them up before they reach the girth you want and putting them into a large container to grow on is also an option. In general it is quicker to leave them in the ground and then tackle to the roots. It will give you time to read up on how to do that part of the process too.
I've sent you a PM.

Many thanks for your help in this. I will certainly read up some more on the art of Bonsai.

I feel dumb for asking how old the "two year old saplings" were. I guess I was more focused on what kind of trees they were. I'm sorry....
