Hi Darwin.
Nice starting trees. I like the "Kalyos"- Streblus asper. The angle from the 3rd picture for the kalyos looks ok as front.

jun

Re: My initial collections
Theft of bonsai seems to be a problem for westerners, my uncle returned from vietnam explaining how they leave very beautiful, old, established bonsai in the street. Says something about our society if theft is the first thing to come to mind.rock wrote:Nice, very nice

Re: My initial collections
What a great garden in such a short amount of time.
I'd love to see trees displayed in front yards instead of having to be hidden away behind fences and locked gates. In my neighbourhood theft would be a concern but I'd be more worried about the bored, teenage vandals, coming by with a pair of hedge clippers. Darn kids!
Any chance we could see some close up pics of individual trees?

Re: My initial collections
Thanks everyone for liking my initial collections. Theft is not a problem in our place since we are located in an exclusive subdivision with only 200 houses. Im the only one who have these "gifts" and there's only one way to get in and out. An old friend neighbor whose always at home also see's these bonsai's. By the way, i still do have around 30 more at the side of my house.
@ Jun, the pic of the streblus asper is a bit twisted but in actual, the front you're suggesting is the front that i do have at the moment. That one is collected 3 years ago and the rest is just February 2012.

Re: My initial collections
Hi Darwin.
If it were my tamarind (the new one) I would cut back the existing branches down to the trunk, to remove the straight branches that would look bad in the future design. and also do carving on the trunk to remedy the inverse taper. the base looks good.

jun

Re: My initial collections
Thanks Jun for the input, i will do that in the coming months. Im just focusing on its establishment since tamarind are a bit sensitive on its first 6 months. Once they were established already, i will make some carving and initial styling.
Im adding my Vitex sp. or Mulawin Surot which i sourced from Ilocos Norte. Bought in March and a bit hopeless that it will survive...at last after 5 months of waiting, shoots started coming out...thanks for the rainy days...
with my 8 year old son as size reference:

Theft of bonsai, especially old material, should be classified as kidnapping and capital punishment via trunk splitters and a jin tool should apply.rock wrote:CraftyTanuki wrote: Says something about our society if theft is the first thing to come to mind.

Re: My initial collections
I purchased a large farrier's horse hoof trimmer/cutter (thanks to Jim) that might fit the bill as well.CraftyTanuki wrote:Theft of bonsai, especially old material, should be classified as kidnapping and capital punishment via trunk splitters and a jin tool should apply.
