River flows are down
So yesterday I wore myself out climbing around a local stream looking for some nice stones. Lots of unique and great colors but no classic shapes. I did bring back two stones, unusual for me who usually does not bring back anything. too picky I quess. Was good to get out and enjoy the opportunty to look in the warm sunshine and cool waters.
This one stone pictured, I have never found anywhere else in any other river.

Hi Dick
Must have been a nice trip....
One of my friends have found more stones of this kind in the the rivers of the northern part of Norway.
Am I right...the hard gray part feels nice, and soft?
Kind regards Yvonne

Re: River flows are down
The grey part feels like sand stone to me but what is curious is the harder stone it has been adhered to. the rivers of white and pink,
I have no idea of what causes that. It would be interesting to find out what causes this, so we could figure out why your rocks there and mine here have similar appearances.

Hi Dick
I dont have the stones here..and I think you are right, in saying the gray part is sandstone, and the white part is hard.
The ( many) stones that was found in Norway, also had this shape.....I wil not be able to suggest anythingthing more about the stones.
Kind regards Yvonne

I see this
Hello Dick,
Nice river shot and gravel bar...
Better ones I have found are mostly center,
in the deep water...
Your stone reminds me of hike back to camp,
with a back pack full of heavy stones.
see as figure, moving slowing, cautiously...
turn up side down, see head, hanging low, center near top,
see arms or backpack straps across mid center, edged in white.
I too would have brought this one home...

stoner....
Why do you think it is that the better stones are found center flow and deeper? I'll have to maybe get a floating device for myself and just float and look. The stones nearest the water's edge always have some kind of covering on them that muddles up the color.
The stones high on the gravel bar seem to show off their color well with no slimy film to disquise color.

hide and seek
Ya Dick,
It is starting to moss over, now that flows are down.
deep water stones are more polished it seems,
and deep colors are easier to spot using a snorkeling mask,
floating air raft really helps to carry stones back.
On a hot day in the water is were you'd want to be.
If hunting on shore, most nice ones are partially buried,
and just peeking out, which takes a crow bar to dig out.
I collect up stream, then gather down stream on way back.
I will be at the Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention
in Sacramento, at Double Tree by Hilton, on Oct. 24-28
as "California Natural Stones" if your in town stop by...

Re: River flows are down
appreciate you sharing stoner.....I hesitated to bring this stone home but i find if I leave them outside in the garden and continue to study some that I really wasn't quite sure of, that sometimes I get a different viewpoint. While this one is laying flat for the picture, when it's turned on it's side it becomes a lot more intresting

I've done the same
Oh ya Dick,
I've re-discover a stone in the yard five years later...
take us old guys longer to do things, can be good tho!.
after all it's the journey not the destination...
flipped over in this stone I see one of my large pond fish, "spot"
solid white, with black eyes, square black patch on head,
and black spot pattern running down the top of it's back...
old big guy too, good eater, splashes around a lot,
but gets the job done...
Hey Mark! any trip is a good trip, anymore!
even if it's to the bathroom, well if I make it...

Re: River flows are down
Hi Dick
One of my coastlines connect Sweden and norway directly with Denmark...This coastline have given me some nice granitstones, polished by water, as they have been traweling attacted to a big seaweed....
I went there yesterday, and did find two of your kind of stones, interresting now I had seen yours...I did not bring my camera, and I did not take them home...but I found two of the same kind
Kind regards Yvonne

Re: River flows are down
so interesting as to wonder what similar conditions caused the stones to react this way. It's a small world, after all

in a smores session
Hey Dick,
During a resent camp fire, I was told that when a stones is formed,
It starts out very hot and rapid cooling will causes it to fracture and separate,
then later a second type of stone fills in the gaps.
A short of cementing together, but I'm no expert!
"only shop talk"...
