SHOHIN UK EXHIBITION - 2013
On behalf of the organising team, I am pleased to announce that an exciting national UK Shohin Bonsai show dedicated to smaller bonsai, will be held on Sunday, March 24th 2013. This exciting national event is being organised by Mark & Ritta Cooper and Bob Bailey, with the support of the Bristol Bonsai Society, the British Shohin Association, and the Federation of British Bonsai Societies.
This will be the only UK national exhibition dedicated to Shohin bonsai in 2013 and will be a “must visit event” for all Shohin Bonsai enthusiasts.
The venue is the recently refurbished Failand Village Hall, near Bristol, UK, which is located just a few miles from Junction 19 on the M5. The postcode is BS8 3TS. The nearby historic and culturally vibrant town of Bristol has a wealth of tourist attractions for those who may wish to make an extended vacation. Bristol airport is only 15minutes away from the venue.
This national show is open to everyone and is specifically for Mame, Shohin and Chuhin size bonsai only. It is our ambition to set high standards, both for exhibits and for the standard of display. We would be very happy to welcome visitors and exhibitors from continental Europe.
NB as a helpful guide for exhibitors:-
• Mame size guide is approximately 10cm from soil surface
• Shohin size guide is approximately 20cm from soil surface
• Chuhin size guide is approximately 45cm maximum from soil surface
Facilities will be provided to display trees to a high standard. Exhibit tables will be covered in high quality black cloth. Background screens for exhibits will be provided, with the cloth being off white in colour with the facility to be able to use pin fixings to hang scrolls if required. Lighting at the venue is very good.
There will be a selection process for exhibits, so please do request details for an application to exhibit as soon as possible. The closing date for applications to exhibit is the 1st January 2013. There will be many awards and trophies presented and details of awards will be announced nearer the time.
Many Bonsai traders offering quality goods relevant to the theme of the event will be in attendance and further details will follow soon. Light refreshments will also be available.
Further information will be made available as plans for the event develop.
To request further details, or to express an interest in this event as a potential exhibitor, please contact Mark Cooper at shohin.uk@btinternet.com

VERY, VERY tempting. What -- besides horrid -- is the weather like there in mid March?

Actually mid-March has been better than the dang summer in the past two years.
Looking forward to this show enormously. Hats off to Mark, Ritta and Bob for organising it.

For the interest of potential exhibitors :
The organisers of the show (Bob, Ritta and I) are planning not to participate in the competition for the main awards (which are yet to be finalised, but there will be plenty of very nice awards/ trophies). We thought it not appropriate for us to organise the event and to participate in the main competition … it seemed to us rather unfair.
So we are planning to have exhibits, but not to participate in the competition for the main awards.
News on traders and award details to follow soon.

Marcus, I think that you have understood our intent and ethos exactly.
The two sets of awards are intended to be separate and distinct. We wanted to be able to separately recognise excellence within a single tree (within the 3 size classes of Mame, Shohin and Chuhin), and also to be able to recognise excellence in display too within the same three size classes. Hopefully this will make the event as "accessible" to as many enthusiasts as possible.
Our upper size limit for Chuhin is 45cm.
If anyone reading this needs more information or is interested in exhibiting at the event, you can contact us via shohin.uk@btinternet.com

On behalf of the British Shohin Association, the renowned bonsai artists John Armitage and Peter Warren will be hosting the “Shohin Clinic” consultation service at the Shohin UK Exhibition on March 24th 2013.
This expert consultation service will be available FREE to all visitors to the show. So if you have a shohin bonsai that you’d like some advice on, bring it along.
This free service may be particularly useful to those visitors who chose to buy a tree at the show and need some advice on care, styling or choice of pot.

News of the "Best Accent Planting" award for the forthcoming Shohin UK Exhibition
Here are some details (to whet your appetites) of the award which will be presented to the owner of the “Best Accent Planting” at the forthcoming Shohin UK Exhibition.
It is a unique and valuable hand built pot fresh from the kiln of Dan and Cecilia Barton. To quote Dan …. “I am very pleased with the way the pot has turned out. It surpassed my expectation. It is just under 3" square and about 2.25" deep. It will be presented in a box and with an accompanying Certificate”.
What a great incentive that is for all of the show’s exhibitors to excel with the quality of their kusamono, shitakusa etc!
