made my first stand !
Hi,
As a change from wiring I had a play about in the garage and made a root stand. The stand was made to measure really for my slanting juniper so I've tried to give it some movement to complement the tree. This is the first one I've ever made, but it won't be the last I think
cheers for looking
Marcus

Re: made my first stand !
Is this made from different roots that have been spliced together or is it a slice through the bottom of a single tree? I'm guessing it isn't carved from a solid lump like some of the stands here.

hahahahaha - it was a quite ugly old fashioned side table but the old oak was just too tempting..................
Thanks everyone,
Yes it is made from 2 south African grape vine stumps - each one had a spread of about 3ft - the stumps were split up, burnt with a blow torch, sand blasted to reveal lots of texture and then screwed together in sections to form the rough shape. I kept adding bits until it was wide enough and the pot balanced . After that the top of the vines were sawn more level and the shape traced onto the oak slab. The top was cut to shape with a jig saw, attached to the vines and carved/smoothed to match the contours. Final step was to level up the bottom section then about 5 coats of laquer.
(the vines are upside down , the 'roots' are vine branches that were carved a bit with lots of burning/sandblasting. I set most pieces alight and got them smouldering to get the nice shapes)
there will be a number 2 stand coming soon, and a carved one from a lower trunk section too.

Re: made my first stand !
I just came across this thread while googling how these stands are made. Awesome job Marcus.
My carpenter brother was browsing some of my bonsai books and mags recently. He liked the trees but his eye really caught the stands. I'm hoping to commission him to make some cheap stands for me. This example will help show him how.
Thanks, Mike
