Larix kaempferi Shohin
Hi,
This is a Larix that just arrived today at my hands and it came from a supplier in the UK. It is about 22 cm (not including the pot) and his style will be a formal upright.
For now, will leave the tree as is and provide good fertilization. Next season I'll wire some branches.
Cheers,

Depending on what you are planning style-wise for it, maybe you could consider finding and using a nice bit of natural stone.

Re: Larix kaempferi Shohin
nice little one, for a good start.
I would make sure, when you style/wire it next year, that you remove branches which are exactly opposite to each other, certainly on the lower half part of the tree. In some pictures we can clearly see there are several 'main' branches whoe are exactly opposite to each other, this is not very attractive. Its not that it is not 'natural', but in bonsai everything in smaller, and therefore these things immediately stand out and ruin the overall balanced look of a 'tree'. In very large specimen, some opposite branches especially in the top part are not that 'harmfull' and dont distract the eye nor the balance of the tree, same thing with crossing branching (on the back of the tree, if in front that always looks ugly).
Have fun wiring it

Nice little tree!
May I ask what is the climate condition at Lisboa/Portugal?
I do like larches very much but unfortunately they cannot grow well where I live...

At this time, we are having temperatures beetwen 9ºC to 15ºC, and sometimes it may drop to 5ºC. Not so cold as in Northen Europe

Re: Larix kaempferi Shohin
Thank you for your answer.
It's almost identical to the climate conditions here.
May I expand my question... Am I correct to suppose that you have had a consultation with the dealer about its tolerance. Then I suppose he knows that larix kaempferi can be grown in zone 9 or 10?
If positive, this is great news for me

Re: Larix kaempferi Shohin
Hello everyone,
This larch was purchased from kaizen bonsai (UK). Although i knew that larch needs long periods of cold, i decided to give it a chance.

Oooh I see.
So then, I will watch your thread for evidence and then maybe I will give larch a chance just like you did
Thanks again!

Great little larch you got here. Hope it does well in your climate. Thanks for the comment on my larch. I'll definitely be watching the progress with this one. I'm a huge larch fan!

Think you should pull that Larix out of the pot and plant it in the ground to speed up the development and get some girth on the trunk.

Re: Larix kaempferi Shohin
Hi Rui,
It looks in your latest picture as if all the branches have been pruned the same amount. In order to have finer branches at the top and get taper in the trunk, you should prune much harder at the top than the lower branches. When the shoots start to grow, don't let them get too long before nipping them back, especially at the top, otherwise the branches will really expand.
Going to be a nice little tree.
Geoff
