Sparingly.

Do NOT keep it soggy. Let it dry before watering again.

If we knew what kind of bonsai and what it was planted in (soil) and could see a picture, we could do better.

Thanks. You have a juniper. Probably a procumbens (low growing) variety.

They more than most bonsai will die if their feet are kept wet, so water very sparingly. It's safe to keep a chopstick jammed deep in the soil. Pull it out every day and feel the dirty end. If it feels damp do NOT water. If it feels dry, water -- from the top, like rain, if possible.

Juniper also are outdoor trees almost everywhere (except, possibly northern Canada and Alaska).

Your juniper, by the way, looks very healthy. There are bonsai clubs in NC. What part are you in?

You can find a good list of books in the FAQs and Tutorials forum. Click HERE.

Also, the best website for beginners is probably THIS ONE. Start with the sections entitled Starting out with your first bonsai and Learning to walk in bonsai.

If those stones are glued on they should be removed. BTW, I am in Chapel Hill today.
