I have been posting images of this tree since I dug it from a neighbours garden on 8th April 2006.

Here is the tree in the ground before work commenced (Lee... don't even think it)

Cutting back the large branches and shortening the stumps.

Here is the large stump in the box on day one 8th April 2006

This is the tree as it looks today 3 years and 6 months later. Still in the box but will be potted in the wonderful John Pitt Pot that I commissioned earlier this year. The next time you see this tree it will be in the pot

I think I have found the species of tree that suits my 'fickle' (there's no effin Tickle) Garden

Nice one. thumbs up

Although, I seem to remember at the first Burrs event that you promised me this tree in exchange for a bottle of Ardbeg. Or was that the hawthorn? Either will do.

Having seen this tree up close and personal on several occasions, I can safely say Tony, that it serves as a great inspiration to me to see what can be acheived with the right material and a bit of know how.

To those who haven't yet met Escallonia-zilla, I recommend you do so as soon as possible, and be prepared to be gobsmacked by the sheer size of this beasty!

Tony,

I've followed your posts onthe development of this tree since you first posted your colleciton pics with interest. It's really an accomplishment. Would love to see it some day in person.

Hi Micheal, thanks for following... its not really been that long a time considering the rapid growth... I am in the process of writing the next article for Bonsai Focus on this tree... another case study... you guys have been with it from the start.

Rick... Ah Rock star.... huuum I wondered when folk would start asking about THAT tree... it will be styled this time next year... its Very slow growing as it it restricted thru the rock... but its coming along nicely... getting a pot is going to be a killer.

Dorothy... "it sure don't look like Kansas Toto" huuum not so sure on your Idea... I quite like the 'tall' aspect ratio of the tree. I has a twisty trunk that needs the foliage to show it off.... bringing the foliage closer to the ground... not for me

Here is the foliage after six months after collecting... I just let it grow freely.

escallonia - Big Escallonia update 17 Oct 2009 (what can be achieved in 42 months) Escall15

To understand how much work has been done on the stump to enhance the 'twist', scale and taper. The first image has the finished tree with the original stump placed exactly in the same position, alongside is the same photo without the original trunk.

Nice idea Dorothy but I think Tony's right. the taper works better for a higher tree. It looks superb at it's present height.

The good thing about Dorothy,s idea is that it wouldn`t be so heavy to lift affraid removing bits of it may make it a bit lighter, but only slightly lol!
i`ve still got the bad back to prove it.

excuse me Tony, do you let any species to grow freely for 6 months only? then you began to wire it ? do you feed your bonsai with bio gold? thanks

Hi Amazonida... there has been a regime of free growth, feeding, wiring and foliage development. Far too much to explain here in one post. I am completing an article for a European Magazine about this tree... I will post 'highlights' on this forum later next year... keep watching Cool
