Question? about malware
I notice occasionally that I am unable to open some threads due to warnings. Presently I am getting a malware warning on Rob K's Which Broom thread. It says that a page contains www. smokewithoutfire.co.u.......(dont want people to open link), a site known to distribute malware.
Anyone else had this problem?

I don't want people to ignore the thread as your protection should stop it from opening. I was just wondering if anyone else was having this show up as well?

Re: Question? about malware
This was discussed on the moderator's forum. That site had popped up on Tony's machine, too, I think. I never saw it. Neither did other mods in the USA.
There was some discussion that it might affect only machines in the UK, but I never heard that resolved, but if it is on something Rob posted . . . ?
Just be careful.
If you have an anti-malware program, run a thorough check of your computer. I use Spybot Search and Destroy. Windows has a good Malware remover.

Re: Question? about malware
Yep, I'm getting that warning message...and have seen it on other threads as well. I'm in the U.S., running on google chrome with Norton antivirus.
Strange thing is, I think I was able to view that thread without any warnings before today.
Edit to add - just noticed that the warning message states (in part) "Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. " So this must be a warning from the browser (google chrome) I don't get the warning when I use I.E.

Re: Question? about malware
I got the same warning message, and I am also running Chrome. It could be unique to the Chrome browser. I did not proceed to the post out of caution.

Re: Question? about malware
What's interesting is that if you use another browser, you go right to the thread (and images) without any warning. Which I did (using IE) and nothing seems to have happened.
I did some googling and couldn't find anything definite concerning the "threat" so, as with most things on the internet, proceed at your own risk (and with appropriate protection!)

Re: Question? about malware
I don't use Chrome, but I have it on my computer. I just got a notice that there's an "improvd" version out. Maybe that would fix whatever problem there might be.

Yes Will I get the exact same malware warning precisely as you describe. Running Chrome.

FWIW, I use Firefox browser and never saw the warning. I also use Malwarebytes free download and it catches junk. There is a free Microsoft virus protection called Security Essentials that my nephew (works for Microsoft) recommended. It works too.

Re: Question? about malware
I am running chrome (in canada, eh) and have gotten that warning also. Nothing bad yet, but I haven't gone past the warning.
P.S. Fiona, Thank you for keeping the forum clean.
