Has anyone ever tried to make a rose bonsai this way? (I've thought about this one for years but never had the resources to try it.) For the trunk, use the bottom 12" from a big ole landscape-grown floribunda and then graft on branches that are miniature or tea roses.

Somewhere on Iwasaki and Gun's pages -- http://www.mini-bonsai.com/indexe.html -- there is a delightful red rose bonsai. There are others, too, I think, but that one sticks in my mind.

We have a wild, climbing rose thet grows eveywhere here with a tiny white or pink flower (most folks call it a pesky weed) that I'm gonna try next spring, and I've had a small-flowered red bush rose in a pot as an accent in years past.

My friend "Patzen", from Belgium, has recently posted this picture of a rose on a forum. It is not a dwarf species, and I do like it :

Another friend, Danièle, from my local club, has a lovely dwarf rose. It is from a cutting of a species she can't remember the name, and it was given to her by a British potter/bonsai artist at a bonsai show (not sure which one, I don't want to upset anybody Wink ) Sorry for the crappy picture, it's the only one I have, and the light was very bad. It was displayed in a 'mini-tokoname' the size of a shoe-box:

An interesting species might be Rosa Eglantia ®️'Intropi'. i bought one this spring, I don't have pictures of it in flowers but I'm sure something can be done with it:

I think I have photos of it in full bloom somewhere, if I can find them, I'll post them.

We have the same or similar here Jim. I've been meaning to try one for years now. Whenever I pull one out by the roots (they do grow everywhere, like weeds) the tap root is always interestingly twisted. seems to be a lot of potential for a mame using the root as the trunk base.

I've had quite a few miniature roses around. I just sold this one online last month. Really bad pot. They're easy, clip & grow, this one I let to simply grow. The more you clip and feed the more they bloom. In a very short time you can very easily achieve a more tree like image with more attention to the direction your growing and clipping. The two most common issues I've had are aphids and blackspot fungus.

The buds on this one right before opening were about as big as my finger tip.

There was a beautiful Lady Banks rose on display at either the 86 or 87 Kokufu-ten. Whichever year was the double show. I have my eye on one in someone's yard here in town, but it's too late to do anything about it now so I'll wait until November.

Easiest for me is a cutting off falling rose or grafting falling rose on wild rose ( rosehips ).
