Anybody have any experience with callous production on Viburnum? I have a great little Shohin Kinkazan Viburnum with a 1.2" scar that needs to heal(right now it's hidden) and was curious if anyone had any info on healing rates for the species.

Ryan
In my experience with Viburnum, they roll a pretty heavy duty scar. Its thick. They heal quickly, but I would give a little extra concave depth for the scar to roll into. But I admit I haven't had the pleasure of working on V. dilatatum yet. I don't think I ever met a Viburnum I didn't like.

Thanks for the info Jay. It's a great little shohin, that unhealed wound's been bothering me, though! I'll see if I can't snap a couple pics on my lunch.

So here its is, with the Big wound from the Sacrifice thickener. The root wound from the last repot and the front wound are 60-70% healed.

Yeah they definitely roll in thick with scar tissue, but I think it looks cool in a way as the mature bark itself is so smooth it gives added character. Those are outstanding trees Ryan...All of them!

Thanks gents :-). They're all nice n fresh in their new pots! For some reason the big wound photo didn't upload, it's right under the main branch, obscured by a little deft wiring. I'll see if I can't get it to upload a little later.
Jay,
You mentioned they callous pretty quickly, do you rewound the callus with Viburnum or let it do it's thing?

You know Ryan I think with any species; once they roll the tissue over, re-wounding seems to be the only expedient way to keep the healing process going to cover a wound. You see the need for it often with Cypress for instance, that need to heal monster trunk reduction wounds.

There comes a point where the tree thinks to itself "good enough." But we as Bonsai growers may want more.
