large yamadori casuarina

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Here is a large yamadori casuarina due for repoting and workshop after the holidays. I need your comment and suggestions.
I will post it in 360, thanks to my good friend Ian.

Nice to hear from you, I do remember you came by with Nonoy. This is one of my largest casuarina, its about 140 cm. It was collected six years ago.

Very awesome casuarina. I loved the 360 display. How did you do it? Will be waiting to see how this tree unfolds (or folds) under your hands. It has all the features of a very promising master casuarina bonsai. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, if properly done, this going to be a stunning tree, aged trunk, natural sharis nice trunk movement,
I already have Ideas on how to work on it but I would like to hear other opinions.

The small sacks you see is a composition of fish emulsion, guano(bat manure) and coco peat.

you have a very beautiful tree. As I told you, I know you will make a wonderful tree no matter what virt I post. So here we go. I was trying to be very natural with the material and made it look dignified old.This is a virtual I made based on frame 58. I am making another virt for the other side of the tree. I will post it later tonight. From what I can see either one side can be chosen as front. It all depends on where the top is growing. Nothing new about that..

We are in a tropical country, trees realy grow fast so with a tree at this stage, it will take about three years to be "finished"

I think Dorthy's virtual is beautiful, but i have a question. I have access to casuarina too but the needles seem too long, can you really make them look like the virtual photo compared with the original picture of your longer needles

I could say that the virts of Dorothy can be achieved, in a separate thread I think the title is" Casuarina (agoho) workshop before and after" I posted three casuarinas with long needles before and short ones after the workshop. These "needles" are not really needles since casuarina does not belong to the pine family, They are actually branchlets.

Back to the needles again; I have come to understand that the needles are branches as you have said, so then you just guide them till you get the ramification you want and at that point wire and pinch to get the pads thicker????? I have actually managed to collect a couple casuarina ( we call em ironwood on maui) and had sucsess with them. But I was too over anxious and eventually killed them. I now see It would be best to let them recover for a year or so with gentle guidince right?

Thats right, thats the way it is done with casuarinas.
Casuarinas are one of the easiest bonsai to maintain once they are finished, you just have to pinch the branchlets atleast twice a month to get thicker pads.
Aside from ironwood, it is called Australian pine although as I said, it is not a pine.
Dont be discouraged, keep on trying, casuarina is a good choice for a bonsai.
