Thanks for posting these.
Tough to go out on a limb based on pictures, but I think this pine has a good shot at the prize:
Other contenders IMO
This olive
This Pine
This juniper
My vote for best deciduous is this horbeam(if there is such a prize)
Anyone else want to take a shot at picking the winner?

Hi Jeffrey
I'm not a tree for such a quality show. I think.
Maybe sometimes.

Re: Photos Noelanders 2012
Can anyone explain to me my impression that one of the judges seemed to have auto-judged his tree (with the other judges) and was rewarded. Specififcally, I saw a semi-cascade pine (Kifu size) awarded and amognst the six signatures of the judges there was his signature as well!
For me, the tree that stole my heart was a small buxus herlandi (covered with small flowers and leaves and had a very textured bark).

The demonstrators were the Noelanders judges. Owners recused themselves from voting on their own trees and the remaining judges decided. But all of them signed the certificates before the winner went on.
The BCI Excellence Award was decided by the BCI Board Members attending.

It was a sweet tree - never seen one flower like that. And the rest of the trees in the exhibition were well done also. There were so many great trees. Hard to decide.

Isn't this Mario Komsta's Red Pine that was in the Kokufu Ten?
Amazing trees!!!!

That was my first reaction after seeing this tree as well. I thought the height need to be reduced by 20% but (being a newbie) I am not worthy to critique such a magnificent tree.jonathan espalin wrote: I really like the hornbeam, too, though with a few cuts and bends it could look a lot more like a proper deciduous tree rather than a pine-like

Pine-like? Really?
Y'all just destroyed a lot of that tree's charm and beauty. (Imho)

Ok. I won't be working on any of your trees then.
Yes, pine-like (horizontal, tiered branching, strong central leader: features of conifers that are far too commonly applied to all bonsai, to make them look like 'bonsai'. I prefer bonsai to look like trees. Maybe you don't like my virtual changes, but it definitely looks more like a natural old deciduous tree and less like a stereotyped bonsai, which I consider an improvement.

Russell, your spot on regarding the tree's charm.
I'm sorry my friend you're having a long necked African animal

Hi Rob
Thank you for explaining the judging for I was starting to see it from a different perspective. That is why it is always better to question to get answers before making judgements.
Thanks again.
What do you think of the 'taxus supported by an iron rod' without which the naturally hollowed trunk would have snapped? It was really impressive to see how the tree was surviving (or better still thriving judging by its green canopy).
Also I saw a pine whose needles were all cut to minimize their size. Is this allowed in exhibitions?

I really really hope you are joking. lol.
Cheers,

looking back at my proposed changes, the tree does lose something, although it also seems to gain something. Maybe the best solution is something else, but I do feel that the tree as presented a Noelanders is almost there, just not all the way, and some changes are needed to get it there.
Even if I were completely wrong, there has to be a better way to express disagreement than David and Simon's responses, though. That doesn't sound like grown-up discussion to me: a more articulate and logical response seems like it would be more appropriate for this forum.
