Juniper rescue questions

So I'm comming home in a few days and I found out that there's new construction going on right down the road from me and there gonna dig up a few good junipers. I'm gonna take a couple and was wondering what should I do with them? Can they be worked now that it's june 3rd? I live in virginia beach if that helps. Anyway what would be the best action to take with these junipers? I was thinking about just planting them in a large bonsai pot and maybe a little wiring and not cut anything, or can I cut a branch here or there?

It's a little late to be digging them up and having them survive without extensive care right now, but if you've got nothing to lose go for it. But do not do anything, no wiring, and especially no cutting. Let them recover for a year, maybe even two.

Contrary to what most people say junipers are NOT easy to take care of! I removed a few from gardens here and there and had very little luck if ur not doing it in March! Keep em in part shade filtered lightfor a couple weeks and mist foliage copiously! Foliar feed maybe. Get as much roots as possible and never allow them to dry out after u dig em. Good luck .....you will definitely need it. I've wondered in your situation if it is best to remove all existing soil or just not to disturb roots. Let me know about survival and what you did with roots please. I'd love to be able to dig up out of ideal seasonal conditions and have some chance of living.

Back in 1989 I was in the landscaping business. I was driving downtown and the city was removing about 100 procumbens nana junipers from a planting.
They were lying in the sun and temps were in the low 90's in July. After asking I took 3 home and one has made it through to this date 2011.

Use a pot that the rootball will fit comfortably, fill it with small lava rock or pumice, and put in the shade until new growth starts, if it does.

I waited around 2 or 3 years until styling and potting.

So....did they live? ???
