Chinese juniper, falling needles and yellowing

Post  lindabob on Thu Jul 07, 2011 1:05 pm

Hi there, Glad to meet you all, I am new to this site. I have an ongoing problem with one of my Chinese Juniper, its falling quite a lot and the tree is looking pretty thin now. The needles seem to go yellow then brown first. I cant work out the problem, I have another one that seems to be fine. Ideas, solutions?? Thank you.

Two ideas, both quite negative.

1. Spider mites, put a piece of white paper under the foliage and tap, if the stuff that drops moves, you probably have spider mites, you can hit the foliage with a strong force of water to knock them off, retest daily, there are chemicals but I don't know how well they work or what is available in the UK.

2. Juniper will react as you describe if the roots are dead, in this case there is probably nothing you can do.

3. Where are you keeping the tree? Are there rocks on the surface?

4. You could remove the tree from the pot and examine the roots, but if the roots are rotten there isn't much you can do.

Could you post a pic of it so we can get a clearer idea of the nature and extent of the problem? It would additionally be helpful if you let us know when the problem started - just recently or at the end of last season or whatever is accurate.

Also, it would help if you could tell us where in England you are as there are many climate/temperature variations and that might be a factor.

Thanks guys, I will try and get a photo to you tomorrow. I live in the English Midlands and the garden is very sheltered. The trees have sun for a good half of the day, and are sheltered from most winds. Although the needles are falling, there is new growth coming out from the trunk and also along some of the branches, i havnt spotted the mite, and my other one seems quite healthy, it has in fact been looking poorly for a couple of years now, but has survived two of the most atrocious winters over these last two years. All of my other trees are also healthy. There are no rocks on the surface, just a little moss. thanks for you help Smile

If moss is growing on the soil surface of a Juniper, the tree might be too wet, have you checked drainage?
