Well, isn't that interesting.

I was out checking on my raised beds when I noticed this peculiar little branch on one of my Chinese elms. Where all the other growth is dark green, this one is various shades of red and orange, with the leaf margins being yellow to lime green.




Time will tell how it develops, but a red and orange leafed Chinese elm would be pretty cool.

New foliage is often reddish on my elms. It turns green.

I've noticed some of the growth on my others elms having a pinkish stem, but nothing quite like this. It might be nothing, but if the leaves keep this way for a while, it would be pretty cool.

are you asking me if a root cutting would not be just a clone of the parent ?

My experience with elms is that they change greatly, when roots are used for new plants. I have one tree that parented a plant the grows branches in circles. One that has smaller leaves than the parent.

AND my big joy [ which I am still learning to grow ] a true weeping elm, that has small leaves, very fine dangling thread like branches and consumes tons of water.
Which I will show off when I learn to grow it properly [ if it survives ] and hopefully has a 3" [ 7.5 cm ] trunk.

That was what I was asking. I'd always heard that cuttings produced a tree exactly like the parent tree, but I haven't read, heard or done much of root cuttings. Can you post some photos and explain how you do your root cuttings?
