Korean Hornbeam Empty Korean Hornbeam

I was given this tree in 1989.

Korean Hornbeam Korea010

Have been refining it ever since. I've kept it small -- 14 inches. Leaves have reduced to about 1/2 - 3/4 inch.

Jim,

Love the progress on this tree. Did you develop it entirely in pots, or did it go into the ground for a while and get cut back? Always loved hornbeams.

Thanks. It has never been outside a bonsai pot from the day I got it. Some of the pots were a bit larger than life, but . . . It is a prime example that you get very little trunk growth when a tree is potted. The trunk has matured nicely, but it is very close to its original size.

I agree it has matured nicely, gives me hope for some of my trees I decided to (big pot) train long term versus the ones I decided to stick in the ground.

JIM,, I think the tree is really nice! I like it,,also the way you have trained the branches..the trunk looksbigger than it probably is because of the muscle look.. great job take care john

Yeah. Guess it was good material to start with. I purposefully keep it small.

I think that's pretty good color, Jim...my KH just turns a greenish yellow just before the leaves drop.

Thanks. They're apparently quite variable. I've seen some with vibrant color. It also seems to vary a bit year to year.

That's about as good a color change I get here in SC, and that's with my native American Hornbeam.
