Back Yard Cherry Prospects

I have a cherry tree in my back yard that is in need of a serious pruning. It is a sour cherry of unknown species, it has served me well for cherry pies and cherry wine. I uaually share the upper half of the harvest with the neighborhood birds.

I am considering leaving some of the branches, of various diameters, for attempts at air layering. Worst thing that could happen would be that the air layering would fail and I would have to remove a branch that I was going to remove anyway. Best case scenario, I might end up with some nice bonsai. Parts on the tree that need removing range from thumb size to wrist size.

While most of the pruning needs to be done fairly quickly, would I start my air layering at the same time as the pruning or wait a little longer? Possibly waiting until after bud break or until I have leaves?

I would wait until later in the spring after the tree has leafed out.
