Hello everyone, looking forward to making your aqaintances as a new member in this forum

Post  Loke Emil on Fri Nov 12, 2010 7:41 pm

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum and I thought it would make great sence to present myself with a thought or two. I don't know if this is the right place to do this? If not, moderators feel free to redirect this 'topic' to a more proper placement.

Well, I've decided to get back into bonsai. Some twenty years ago I first got bitten by the bonsai bug. However university studies took my time, bonsai thieves took my small collection of fine nordic yamadori-trees. And now I have reached a point in life, in which bonsai cultivation is yet again possible. Over the years I never stopped to be amazed at what my old Danish (and other) fellow bonsai enthusiasts have achieved. My 'eye' for 'perfect' bonsai aesthethics have grown over time, but I'm afraid my level of experience in cultivation techniques has evaporated over the past decade. Yamadori is my main interest and with lots of patience I know I'll get the 'finger touch' back.

So it is my hope to regain my old finger touch and something new through exploring, talking, sharing bonsai thoughts on this forum.

Best regards

/Loke Emil, DK

Welcome Loke, If you have questions abut the best way to get back into the spot of bonsai, the "Bonsai Questions" forum is the lace to go.

Look forward to hearing from you -- though I too will be little help with Danish conditions.

Hi Ogie and Will

thanks for the welcome Smile

And oh my goodness Will, is that a great yamadori (Sylvestris?) next to you (in your avatar picture)...

And Ogie...I quess you could be the man to ask for advice concerning a large ficus Benjamina I discovered at my new office. I have no experience with (sub)tropical trees. It is not trained as a bonsai, but it has a massive trunk and perhaps a great potential as a bonsai. I'll concider sharing photos of this tree ;-)

Yes Loke, the Pine in my avatar is a Sylvestris. It was collected in Scotland 2005. Too bloody big and heavy though. Rolling Eyes

Actually I have found that people who live in the tropics are not much help with growing tropicals in the North. We are on different planets. Jay Gaydosh has been experimenting with standard Ficus benjamina in a northern office. Jay, are you there?
Do you have any source of winter light for the tree except for the windowsill? If you can stick it right under a fluorescent light, at least during office hours, that will help. You won't be able to do extensive work on it during the winter, maybe some light pruning. Do post a picture.
Standard Ficus benjamina is not a prime bonsai species, but it is very good to practice on until you can get hold of F. salicaria, F. microcarpa, or a dwarf F. benjamina.
