Nurseries in Norther California Empty Nurseries in Norther California

Post  ekillians Fri Apr 10, 2009 2:30 am

Hi everyone, I'm new to IBC but a long time bonsai enthusiast.

Could anyone recommend some bonsai nurseries and displays in the northern California area? I will be 30 minutes outside of San Fransisco in the San Mateo/Palo Alto area but would consider driving an hour or two. I will also be driving way up north to see the giant redwoods so anywhere along the way would also be an option.

Any suggestions would be much appreciate. I'm looking to view and/or purchase while visiting.

I just moved to sonoma county and havent gotten around as much as I wish. But to purchase material consider Brent in kelseyville,Lake county. You can find him at evergreengardenworks.com. If you want to see some cool bonsai Jim Gremel is in Occidental By appointment only. jimgremel.com . Here is the links page from Redwood Empire Bonsai society. http://www.rebsbonsai.org/links_page.html.

Also johhny uchida has a place in Hayward. But I havent been yet.

There is also the Golden State Bonsai Collection in Oakland. Definitely worth a visit.

Nurseries in Norther California Empty Jim Gremel

Call Jim Gremel and set up an appointment, here is a link to his website, he's in Occidental which is somewhat on your way to the redwoods, although you'll need to take a (very scenic) detour. He was the overall winner at the first national bonsai exhibition and he grows and sells some of the finest bonsai in the United States (a claim that I'm thinking he can make given his award....)

Don't forget Ian and Janet at Lone Pine Gardens in Sebastopol and Sumigawa in Cotati.

GSBF, the Golden State Bonsai Federation, used to produce the Golden Shopper, which listed bonsai resources in California. It started out as a printed product, then it was to be found on their web site. Unfortunately, it seems to have missed the cut in the latest site revision. They do have a list of links, but that's not so helpful.

I found this nursery just this past weekend. It is a small backwoods nursery but they have plenty of stock. Check out their web site.
