Re: modern shohin display
The 100th special issue of Bonsai focus features the BMW exhibit on the title page and runs an article about it for several pages. It is a great honor to be present in this publication which is published in several languages around the world. I am proud of my team with Alex, Walter, Lena, Boris and Stephan. I am also proud for the BMW team which had the guts to do this against strong resistance.
The exhibit will be repeated from end of March to end of September 2011.

Would it be possible to alter the color of the blocks to add depth and tone? Stark white gives a modernist feel, but as others have said it can also distract from the trees themselves.

Re: modern shohin display
Alec,
BMW will continue the exhibit from end of March to end of September 2011. To not have the very same exhibit again they have decided to use blocks of the same size, but covered with blackish/greyish stone. So the blocks will be very dark. This probably will result in bringing out the trees more colorful and denser I suppose and more elegant I hope. One can well see the effect in using background either very dark or very light. Attached two potographs which were shot within five minutes. See what happens!
Anyway, it will be quite interesting to see the effect. The dark blocks will be used throughout 2011. We'll see. i'll report.

Walter -
Thank you for these shots...excellent example of how a simple background can change the visual effect dramatically. Without wishing to further complicate the issue, what are your thoughts regarding backgrounds and settings used for photography vs. an ambient lighting situation such as the BMW exhibit?

Re: modern shohin display
Alec, this is not really the place to discuss photographing of bonsai. I have a prepared lecture about that subject which takes 30 minutes. Sorry.

Re: modern shohin display
I like this idea of showing and/or displaying a shohin. I may choose and/or
consider other colors though, probably not white. Colors like earth color,
green, black, or red may be considered.
Again, I like this idea of shohin display.
