Honeysuckle Empty Honeysuckle

I was the recipient of 3 potted Lonicera xylostem "claveyyi" from a friend at a local nursery, they were not appealing to the landscape folks so they have some decent potential as bonsai. Does anyone have any suggestions or helpful information. I have never worked with honeysuckle.

I dont know this one. I have one climber lonicera that I am trying. Long internodes, no berries, terribly twisted long winding trunk...but it will be fun.

Hi David

I tried honeysuckle, and I cant say I was pleased...they often die back a branch, or die back a root, even if the tree is very much cared for...treelike or bushlike plants is the good material for bonsai, if you ask me.

Kind regards Yvonne

Lonicera xylosteum is a shrub, native of England, apparently similar to the Tatarian honeysuckle. It is widely naturalized in the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest. It is an invasive weed in some areas. This is usually a sign that it is possible bonsai material. Try it. Read Bonsai from the Wild by Nick Lenz. There is a chapter on honeysuckle.

Thank you Iris, I will try to locate the book somewhere. Living in northwest Iowa it will be a challenge.
Thanks again.
