Weigela 2006 - 2010
Hallo from Salzburg
I want to show you the change of my weigelia from 2006 until 2010.
The tree was lying the whole winter by a street in our city. In spring i stoped my car and was taking along the weigelia. I thought the tree is dead. But we will see. So i plantet him into a pot. 5 weeks later the first leaves came out. In the first year he could grow freely. 2007 i begann to form a bonsai.
2006 as i found the tree.
The old trunk was dead and has a beatifull deadwood. The new trunk is alive.
One year later i was cutting the trunk and plantet the weigelia in a smaller pot.
This is how the weigelia looks like today.
Weigelia 25 cm high.
I love the beautifull deadwood.
Weigelia is not often seen as bonsai in Europe. I don´t know why, because she grows good and is blooming nice

I have Wigelia growing all along he front of my house under the deck. I've thoght of it, but dismissed it as not a good subject because branches are too stiff and leaves a bit large (long). Maybe I'll have to change my opinion.
Nice job. Let us see it when it's in full leaf.

Thank´s for your comments,
@ Jim
If a tree has too big leaves i cut them as shown. After cutting i shower the tree with water. So the leaves don´t get brown where the cuts are.
Fold the leave in the middle
@ Pavel
Yes, the thin branches sometimes die in winter if you cut too late. In the growing season i cut the branches back to two leaves if they have 6 leaves. I do this from beginn of growing until end of august. Now the branches can grow freely and i cut them in winter or in early spring. So the most of the fine branches dont´t die.
Your weigelia will be a really good tree.

update
I think it's sometimes the same to us. We form a tree and we know something is wrong.
2011 i planted the tree in an other pot. The tree is well, but he has no dynamic.
It is better to see without leaves.
The deadwood is static and the tree has no movement. Maybe it is better if i plant the tree next year in a deeper pot and turn more right.
The new pot is good, but not deep enough to bring the two ugly roots under the earth. It is the same as last year.
Ok - small changes do nothing. So let´s go and do it right.
In summer i cut back the crown very hard. I hoped the tree makes new buds on better position. But he didn´t. So i removed the whole crown and make a new one.
In spring 2013 i airlayered the roots.
I cuted the bark and drilled a wire
The tree was planted in a deeper pot again.
In summer 2013
The tree could grow free this year to make new roots.
And yes he dit it.
The next step is to remove the first branch.
This is my vision of the tree in two years.

Great progression sequence - well photographed and each step clearly explained.
IMHO I like the tree in the deeper cascade pot and I think it loses a bit of its character in your proposed shallower one. Just my opinion though and for interest I'd like to see how it looks in the deeper pot even with the first branch removed as you are planning.

now it´s time for a update
yesterday I checked the airlayering.
The tree has many strong roots. But dit enough roots grow at the arilayering position?
o.k. that looks fine. There are enough roots to cut the old root under the ring of wire.
Unfortunately I did not have a pot with the right color. But i am sure i will finde it this year.

Hi
The dead wood is looking like some living creature with nose and ears . In the older pics it resemled like a puppy with tale holding the cascade tree from falling down with the cascade illusion of falling down like trying to keep in proper place.
In newer pics the dead wood being removed in the tale section it somewhat shows living creature holding it
Nice deadwood
Good luck with ur buddy
