I could guess but won't. Please can you try to get a closer shot of a shoot so that we can see the leaves in detail.

You will love this tree. I've got a few and they are easy to care for and propagate and resemble
Elms, but can be grown indoors all year round.
Good luck with it!!!

Your tree is a Sagaretia and is can not handle temperatures below 50° F. It will die if you subject it
to temps. below that. In fact I would not put mine out in temps. below 60°F.

it has always been outside, in winter on a protected none windy or wet place but outside.
And it survived,......last year -18 degrees Celsius that is.
Wasn't anything wrong with it, leaves had fallen of that was all, but i think pretty natural.

I'm very surprised to hear that. I didn't think a Sagaretia could survive that kind of cold.

the man who gave it to me wasn't to carefull with his tree's on the other hand he sure was and tried them out.

also kept outside were Chinese elms, also indoor bonsai's....?

just by trying and a little neglect sometimes you learn the most.....

It makes a lot more sense that the tree is an Elm if it lived after being subjected to those temperatures
that you refer to earlier.
Elms are basically out door trees that some people are claiming can be kept indoors but many feel that
they should be outside and allowed to go dormant in the winter in order to thrive in the long term.
Can you take a close-up of a leaf or two of your tree so that we can make a positivfe ID?

Does this tree flower? If so it kinda looks like crape myrtle to me . That would also explain why it can withstand the winter temps and still thrive.

I keep my Chinese Elms and Sageretti outside and only protect them by moving indoors if the temp goes below freezing (0C/32F) We can get into the 30s and 40s in the winter and the tropical trees don't like it but they live.

it isn't an elm, leaves do lack little saw teeth.

Your tree definitely looks like a Sageretia to me.

I grow a few of these myself and have found them to be very cold hardy regardless of what the reference books say.

I treat mine the same as Rob, I will protect the mature specimen trees in an unheated shed when we are expecting a freeze. I do this more out of respect for the time I have invested in them rather than the fact that they will not survive the cold. When my trees were smaller and less developed, I would leave them out all winter. I live a few hours north of Rob's location where we regularly experience temperatures in the mid to upper 20's (F) during the winter months.

Surprisingly, the Sageretia is the first trees that I repot each year. Mine usually start pushing new buds by the middle of January.

Paul

I find this information totally amazing!! I have always regarded them as Sub-Tropical and unable to cope with
temperatures below 40° F.
See here for one source:
http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Sageretia.html

I've read the same in other places but I guess I have to defer if people are growing them at colder temps.
We get temps. in the 0° - 10° F area on occasion and I would certainly not put them out in that weather, but
now I guess I will let them experience cooler temps. in the fall before bringing them in.
This has been an education for me.....thank you all.

if u can put them inside why not, i am myself doing this at the moment.
Dont want to lose it.

but fact is that last year when the tree wasn't mine it lasted all winter outside at tempratures -18 degrees celcius -0.4 f
came out of winter with none foilege left.

Same as the punica granatum he gave me totaly leafless out of winter march first leaves came out and 1 apple at the end of season.
was slow in grow tough......

i know a guy that grows bananas out here works to..... Smile
