Bonsai in Hawai'i

There is a possibility my husband & I will go to Hawai'i next year. One place we will visit is Wahiawa. Any particular places or people I shouldn't miss? Is there a show or symposium I could attend? I would prefer to go in the late winter or summer if it isn't too hot. April & May are very busy around here.

If nothing else, start at David Fukumoto's Kurtistown location on the Big Island. See http://www.fukubonsai.com/ He can probably refer you to every other enthusiast and bonsai event in the state.

Oops. I don't know much about Hawaii. I will be on Oahu. I see there is a bonsai club there. David Fukumoto invited me to his nursery.

Well, he is on the Big Island (Island of Hawaii). From what I hear, his place is well worth a visit -- and you can go see Kilauea volcano bubble and boil, too. You can fly or cruise to the Big Island.

There are several Oahu (Honolulu) clubs. Go to the ABS site.

I wasn't doing bonsai either time I lived there (1949-53 and 1967-68), so can't say anything about the bonsai scene there. We have had members from Hawaii, but they may not have made the transition. (I think they were all from the Big Island.)
