Though highly invasive, I always thought Buckthorns have potential. If this tree grows vigorously by next summer, chop it off above the lowest shoot (shown in the picture). Maybe, you'll get other shoots that present a better trunk extension; then use that.

Great, I love going out and search for trees, or watching this kind of topics.

I can't wait for updates on this, I have several around the yard, at least that's what I've concluded they are. They are more shrub like than tree like, it'll be cool to see some progression on this. I've contemplated digging them but I was way to busy with all the other collection digs this spring. I scored 12 or so field grown hawthorns, a few crabs, and a bunch of big fat hedge privets with awesome bark, dead wood, and large trunks(I'll post some pics once they start growing and I see what survives

brian - i believe their natural growth habit is upright and tree like, but i have another one that i found in my front yard that was more shrub-like that i successfully harvested a couplafew years ago... but that ones form was due to constantly being whacked back by me in the years before i caught bonsai-itis and realized what i had there...

because of everything emanating from a very short, very fat trunk, i have dubbed it "the earl of toad f@cI< hollow" Twisted Evil
(it is one ugly lil bugger)

Well since I saw your post I re-researched some things. What I have has quite small leaves and grows berries, and from what I read buckthorn claim to have larger leaves. Maybe I have no clue what I have but will still prob dig em next spring and see what happens

Precisely good sir. I dug up some what I think is some sort of pussy willow, they are weeds and I have tons, they bloom cotton type poofs at the end of the branches before it leafs out. I found one with killer fluted bark, so i chopped it a couplafew months ago and dug it up a couplafew weeks ago. It's pushing buds and seems to be ready so we'll see how it goes. I'll snag some pics and see if I can get some identification on this batch
