For the Larch-maniacs...

Hello there,

I just got an ad from an online tree nursery that I ordered plants from some time ago. They have a selection of dwarf conifers, among them some Larix cultivars I had never heard of:

- Larix decidua 'Little Bogle'
- Larix kaempferi 'Blue Dwarf'
- Larix kaempferi 'Grey Pearl'
- Larix kaempferi 'Jacobsen's Pyramid'
- Larix laricina 'Arethusa Bog'
- Larix kaempferi 'Diana' contorta

I wonder if any of them would be suitable for bonsai (that they spell "bonzaï" ^^) and if they're grafted or cloned, but I'll ask them.

The problem is that I'm reaching the months when I have taxes to pay, etc, and I must admit that I'm tempted by buying all of them!

Has anyone heard of or seen any of these? Here's the link to the page (in French, oeuf corse):

Why don't you buy two of each and ship one of each to me so we can compare notes!

If they are cuttings or very low grafts I bet they would work well (except for the last one which is a contorta).

Opps, looks like 5 of the 6 are available on this side of the pond so Alain is probably going to tell me to buy them myself.

I don't imagine the tamarack (laricina) would last very long in zone 8 conditions. They like it cold in winter. And not too super hot in summer.

I've read more about L. laricina and I'm afraid you're right...

Every now and then a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Tamaracks don't like to be hot. And in containers they are the only trees I have organic material in. They love water. Lots. So a little sphagnum collected fresh from the swamp goes in.
I don't have any other larches but I don't think they like as much water and can live where it isn't as cold.

I found that Western Larch, Larix occidentalis, likes full sun (they grow in the mountains around here), but cool roots. I picked up a bunch of seedlings and planted some forests. The trees that were on the south side would die every year. They are often called tamarack in this area, particularly when used as firewood.
