The tree is ten inches in height from the soil line. Cultivar is 'Hawaiian Elf variegata' - the pot belonged to my father who purchased it back in the 50's....I would appreciate any info. about it as I do not know anything about its origin/history. Thanks in advance.

Question: Does "it" refer to the tree or the pot?

Sorry, Jim...the question refers to the pot, which was given to me before my father passed away many years ago.

I kinda thought that, Tom.

If I had to guess, I'd say Chinese. That shade of blue glaze was used in the mid 20th on some of their nicer pots. It is much more attractive than the blue commonly used on Chinese pots these days. Are there no markings on the bottom?

I had one (an 8-sided pot) with a similar glaze that I liked a lot that we bought in Hong Kong in the mid 50s. Unfortunately, something knocked it and its tree of a table 2 years ago and it shattered.

Thanks...

I have a similar cultivar. Given the proper conditions, which in Zone 5 means full sun all summer, for you maybe a little less, and regular pruning, they make attractive houseplants. I would not consider them bonsai materiaL.

Hi, John:

Good hearing from you and thanks for the kind words....actually I do not have a greenhouse, but wish that I did During the long winter I have the trops. sited in an unheated garage with overheard fluorescents....where I am located I can have them outside from about mid-May through the end of September (sometimes even mid-October)...depending on the weather...which you know too well, can be really fickle in WV.
I have enjoyed your posts....for me, spring cannot arrive soon enough :-)

Iris: Good hearing from you. I certainly respect your opinion, but I disagree regarding scheffs. cultivated as bonsai...I would refer to the wonderful work of David Fukumoto and Jerry Meislik just to name a couple of artists, regarding their work with tropicals, especially arboricola cultivars.

Tom

Nice. Like the new pot, too.

Did you ever discover more about the old pot?

Beautiful Scheff. Tom. Curious, in your first picture there appears to be a crack in the left most trunk right after the first wire wrap. Is that what it is?

Thank you, Ryan....and yes, that is what you see...in the current picture you can see where I applied cutpaste in the apical area of that trunk (which is now on the right side....during past restyling I changed the front by rotating the tree 180 degrees).
