Whatzit? I hope to get a relatively quick turnaround on this one. I was told its name a couple of years ago, but my mind is like a sieve . . . I want to say it is a mini Thuja of some ilk.

This is a Cryptomeria japonica 'Spiraliter'Identity needed! Hpim0610

I think yours may be Tsuga canadensis 'Curly', a dwarf variety of Canadian Hemlock.

Thanks. I'm quite sure it's not a Cryptomeria. I'll go with Tsuga for the time being, tho the foliage is unlike any hemlock I've seen.

Other suggestions appreciated. Iris?

Actually, I think it's a dwarf hinoki, Chamaecyparis obtusa .... or sawara, Chamaecyparis pisifera....

I have a larger one of each, and I can see no similarities.

I was thinking along the same line, too, Russel. I know I've seen this tree and after considerable browsing, I ended back where we started. Humor me and have a look at Cryptomeria japonica 'Bandai Sugi'. I was viewing an untrimmed tree, but the description sounds right and it is highly favored for bonsai.

No.  Needles too large and too distinct.

"Needles" (foliage) on this tree (plant) are 1-2mm.  This is about the ultimate magnification I can get out of my camera.

Jim- just a suggestion - could it possibly be Thujopsis Dolabrata? The close up of the foliage looks remarkably similar. And I have seen a Thuja Plicata that looks a little like those fleshy leaves. Good hunting!

Awhile back there was a discussion somewhere about these and their development as bonsai in Japan (the Chamaecyparis I'm thinking of). Long thread by a guy studying in Japan, I think he was European, maybe Spanish. There was a giant maple in the thread too, he just kept adding to the thread and never started a new one.... lots of pictures and videos.

If I had to venture a guess I'd be putting my money on Cryptomeria. There are hundreds of dwarf forms but that foliage looks alot like my C. japonica "jundi sugi" that has been pot bound for a number of years. That braided foliage is oh so typical of Cryptomeria and the trunk, branch and foliage structure are typical of the dwarf forms.

How about dwarf hinoki cypress "Reis". I think I saw one at the place I got a Nana Gracilis.

Jim, your tree looks very much like a dwarf Chamaecyparis cultivar to me.

I'm going to follow Russell's and Bill's suggestion of Chamaecyparis -- an obtusa cultivar. Or, C. pisifera 'Nana Parslorii' .

Thanks all for the help.  If only my memory were better.  <g>
