Munched Malus
More likely birds. Next year keep it in a birdcage. Birdcages work both ways.
You should see the elaborate structure we have to put up to keep our dogs away from the blueberries.

Oh it was him alright! He didn't eat them all, some where left with teeth marks and branches attached. Hard to be angry at him though, they did look tasty

Probably done you a huge favour Ian. Like Dan Barton I once left the fruit on too long on my Crab and lost the tree. It does take huge reserves to make the fruit.
Like the dog though.

Well, one of our terriors likes to collect tomatoes, peppers, and--especially--cucumbers from our garden. Our other terrior picked up this appetite from him, so now we have two garden thieves. Forturnately, they haven't yet acquired a taste for bosai, although none of mine look so enticing as your malus!

I don't think he looks guilty as much as unconcerned..."Whatever"!
Nice looking tree and dog!

I've managed to keep our Buddy away from my malus. But then again, he is far too preoccupied in other directions with it being the Bramble season right now.

Aww but dad they were sooo nice... One of my dogs had a bad habit of eating my trees (not just fruit) thankfully he grew out of it, tho did alot of damage in a few short months.
Using a bird cage as suggested is a great idea tho I am thinking I should put the cockatoo in a cage instead, he is the latest 'issue' with my own trees, not a pruner but a repotter

Re: Munched Malus
I dunno, from the look of the tree, the dog and your couch...
I think you need bigger trees or smaller dogs!
I solved the problem. I put the trees on benches and when my Great Dane/Rotweiller cross passed away, we got a Yorkie and a Yorkie/Chihuahua cross. They couldn't get to my trees if they stood on each other's shoulders! (yeah, I know they are cat smilies, but there is no dog smilie and the pig and reideer smilies look even worse.)

Ian,
My dog also has a taste for apples. He always eats the ones that fall from the trees, sometimes I have to stop him as I think to many could make him sick. He acquired the taste from watching horses munch on them. Better to train him after the squirrels though.

How is this malus going? Any development?

Still going strong, now growing at altitude, well, the top bench out of the dog's reach
I've been allowing it some extra growth since the dog incident to recover some of the branches. I let it flower but remove the fruit straight away to allow more energy for growth. Seems to be working, sorry no photos from this Autumn.

Re: Munched Malus
One of my dogs once ate the cherry tomatoes out of the compost pile (as well as carrots out of the ground). Tomatoes started growing in kennel and actually fruited. I wasn't going to eat them though.

Re: Munched Malus
ours picks ripe strawberries from the plants, takes red tomatoes (not green tho) from the greenhouse and tries everything to get on the benches for my fertiliser cakes.
fair trade tho - he has great hearing and barks if anyone or anything is lurking close by
